Since Bhutanese refugees started coming to the United States in the late 1990s, they have made various efforts at different levels to create a platform to represent their interests. In late 2006, an attempt was made to involve ALL the Bhutanese refugees living in the United States in a discussion about the need for a platform to address their needs and interests, especially their culture, tradition, the connection to their homeland, and their integration in the mainstream American community. The idea for an organization inclusive of all the Bhutanese living in the United States was floated. It received an overwhelming response. The root for the Association of Bhutanese in America (ABA) Inc. was planted. A list of names was proposed for an interim board of directors (IBoD). The IBoD eventually registered the association in the District of Columbia in July 2007. ABA was born!
